How To Choose a Hard Hat

June 10th, 2011 No comments

Finding the hard hat that’s right for you can be frustrating because of the overwhelming number of options out there as well as the fact that many times you are looking for a hard hat that meets certain requirements.  To make it easier we developed a Hard Hat Selection Guide that narrows down your choices, allowing you to specify what you want in seven different categories that are important to think about when choosing a hard hat.

1)      Brands:  We carry all the top brands, and this tab makes it easy to choose your favorite brand, or if you don’t have a preference, you can skip this tab and move on to the next, and no brands will be eliminated from your search.

2)      Style: The most common hard hats are the cap style, full brim, and bump caps, but we also carry helmets, utility hats, and cowboy versions as well.

3)      Suspension: Most hard hats feature either a pinlock or ratchet suspension.  Pinlock suspension allows the wearer to adjust the fit with a locking mechanism similar to those found in the back of baseball caps, while the ratchet suspension uses a quick ratchet adjusting knob to tighten or loosen the hard hat.

4)      Color:  There are a variety of color and graphics options available.  It is best to check if you need a particular color based on your industry or the company colors before purchasing.  If you aren’t required to wear a certain color, there are many fun graphic helmets you can choose from to show your interests, such as NFL, MLB, NBA, and American Flag hard hats!

5)      Material:  Hard Hats come in a variety of materials, the most common being plastic because it is lightweight, affordable, durable, and can be used in most industries.  Other materials include fiberglass, which is good for protection against extreme heat, aluminum, which is less common nowadays, and fabric, which used for baseball style bump caps.

6)      Rating:  Different industries require different performance standards for hard hats based upon the industry that people work in, which is known as the ANSI rating.  An ANSI Type 1 rating means that the hard hat protects against blows to the top of the head, ANSI Type 2 hard hats meet both vertical and lateral impact and penetration requirements, and Non-ANSI hard hats are not OSHA certified and should only be used in situations where a hard hat is not OSHA required.

7)      Price:  We have hard hats to fit every budget, making it easy for you to get the protection you need at the right price!  In fact, we have more hard hats in the “Under $10” group than in any other price range!

So no matter what kind of hard hat you are looking for you will be able to easily sort through your options with the Hard Hat Selection Guide!

How to Avoid Getting Overheated in your Hard Hat!

May 6th, 2011 No comments

Working outside can be miserable in the summer months, especially when you have to wear a hard hat.  This makes hard hat cooling accessories necessary to keep comfortable and prevent overheating.  With all of the different styles of cooling accessories available for hard hats, you can pick the one that works best for you, or combine a couple of different products to really increase your “cool” factor!

To prevent burning your neck, a cooling hard hat pad with neck shade will ensure that your head and neck stays shielded from the sun.  The hat pad and neck shade is made of a special material that, when soaked in cold water for 15 minutes, provides up to two days of cooling comfort. The shade simply attaches to the suspension of your hard hat, so there is no interfering with your head protection!

Another option for keeping your neck cool is a collar bandana.  They are easy to throw on when the afternoon starts to heat up, and take off when you are done with work and in the protection of your air conditioned car.

To keep sweat out of your eyes and make the suspension strap in your hard hat more comfortable, put on a headband.  It features cooling crystals embedded into the fabric that activate quickly to cool you at a moment’s notice.

A slim fitting skull cap is perfect to layer under your hard hat, and a great way to cool your entire head.  This skull cap also features the cooling crystals, which will keep your entire head cool in even on the longest, hottest days.

With cooling accessories, working outside in the summer while wearing your hard hat doesn’t have to be miserable.  Just grab one of these products and enjoy the nice weather!

Avoid Worker Heat Stress

March 22nd, 2011 No comments

Spring has begun and already temperatures are rising across the country. Summer will be here soon and with that comes many cases of worker heat stress. According to OSHA, heat stress happens when workers are outdoors or in hot conditions for long periods of time, and their bodies are unable to maintain a normal temperature. Health problems that can occur from heat stress are heat stroke, heat cramps, heat rash and heat exhaustion.

A common misconception is that starting work early in the morning will eliminate heat concerns. However, humidity, which contributes to heat stress, is greater earlier in the day. Early work schedules can also increase worker fatigue, making it harder for bodies to regulate temperatures.  How can the threat of worker heat stress be reduced? You can’t control the outdoor temperatures, but there are still many precautions you can take on job sites.

1. Have shaded or indoor rest areas. When workers can eat lunch and take short breaks in cooler areas, there bodies are more capable of regulating temperature.

2. Make sure enough water and other hydrating drinks are available to every worker. If possible, drinks should be kept between 50 and 60 Fahrenheit. Fluids should be consumed in moderate quantities throughout the work period, instead of large quantities just on breaks. Also, workers should not consume more than 12 quarts of fluids in a 24 hour period.

3. Monitor workers wearing semi-permeable or impermeable clothing that can trap heat. When possible, allow workers to wear permeable safety clothing, like mesh safety vests.

4. If workers are not wearing hard hats, they should be wearing some type of hat or headband. There are also safety cooling accessories, like baseball cap and hard hat liners and pads with cooling features.

5. Allow workers to gradually get used to hot environments. When workers have not previously been working on a hot outdoor job site, start with a smaller work period on the site, and gradually increase hours over a five day period.

Train both workers and job site supervisors on the importance of heat safety. Make sure everyone understands the harmful effects of heat stress, and the steps they can take to prevent it.

Tips for Hard Hat Safety

March 1st, 2011 No comments

According to OSHA, over 6 million people work on construction sites across the U.S. on any given day. The fatal injury rate is also higher for the construction industry than the national average for all other industries.  This being said, there are many safety precautions you can take to reduce the number of accidents and injuries on your job site. If workers are required to wear safety hard hats on your job site, there are a few safety tips to keep in mind.

1. Workers should wear hard hats when there is any potential for falling objects from above, or potential for bumps to their heads from fixed objects.

2. Hard hats should be worn when there is potential head contact with electrical hazards.

3. Head protection should be replaced after an electrical shock or heavy blow.

4. Hard hats should be frequently inspected for cracks, dents or deterioration. They should also be maintained in good condition.

Cowboy Style Hard Hats

February 8th, 2011 No comments

Bringing fun and character to safety gear is a great way to encourage workers to wear their required protection. Cowboy style hard hats are perfect for workers who need to wear head protection, but want nontraditional hard hats. Already popular in southern and mid-western areas, cowboy hard hats offer excellent protection as well as a style element.

The full brim on cowboy hard hats is wider than typical full brim hard hats. This feature gives the wearer face and neck protection from rain, sunlight and harmful UV rays. The outer shell on a cowboy hard hat is a dense, polyethylene material that deflects blows and reduces impacts.

Most cowboy style hard hats have ratchet suspensions, which means they are easy to adjust even while being worn. Top manufacturers like Jackson Safety and Occunomix produce cowboy hard hats in several styles and colors. Saddle up and get your hands on cowboy hard hats to encourage workers to wear their hard hats all the time.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

January 17th, 2011 No comments

Avoid injuries and costly OSHA citations at your company, by ensuring workers are wearing all of the required personal protective equipment for that job site. In addition to hard hats, PPE can include hearing protection, fall protection, high visibility safety clothing and eye protection.

In the last decade, two of the most common OSHA citations include the areas of fall protection and head protection. The citations for fall protection are simply that workers were not wearing any type of harnesses or safety straps when on scaffolds and other high areas. If the construction site or job site you are on requires fall protection, there are several types of adjustable harnesses for men and women. OSHA also commonly fines companies for lack of proper head protection. Quality discount hard hats can start around $5.00 per hard hat, so there’s no reason to ignore this major safety requirement.

Make sure workers are following safety guidelines and wearing all of the required personal protective equipment. If workers are working at night, near roadways or high traffic areas, or in inclement weather, they should be wearing ANSI approved safety vests or high visibility safety apparel. Other job site requirements can include hearing protection and safety glasses. If workers need hard hats and ear muffs, there are specially designed slotted cap ear muffs to be worn with hard hats.

Keep your workers safe, comfortable and OSHA approved with the proper safety gear. PPE is available in a range of styles and prices. You can find the price points that work best for your company, and not sacrifice safety for budget.
