Styles of Hard Hats
Need to buy a hard hat for work but not sure which one to choose? We can help! Here is a quick guide to the different styles of hard hats:
Cap style hard hats look like your basic baseball caps, with a short bill on the front of each. Slotted or non-slotted options are available for cap style hard hats. With slotted hard hats, you can attach hard hat accessories, like lights, ear muffs, faceshields, and more. While non-slotted hard hats do not offer accessory slots, you usually get a built-in rain trough that prevents rain from running down your neck.
Full brim hard hats each have an encircling brim around the hat that acts as a shield. If you’re looking for 360-degree protection from getting a sunburn on the job, go with this style of hard hat. Full brim hard hats offer protection from UV rays, rain, splashes, and harmful debris. Many full brim hard hats also offer protection from electrical shocks.
Cowboy style hard hats are stylish hard hats that are shaped like wide-rimmed cowboy hats. Since they also have full brims, cowboy style hard hats offer protection from the sun, too.
Bump caps are designed for lightweight head protection only. Named “bump caps” because they are intended to only prevent minor bumps and bruises, bump caps are NOT ANSI certified head protection and therefore cannot absorb impacts that the ANSI hard hats mentioned above can absorb.
Workers in different industries wear different styles of hard hats, so be sure to ask your supervisor if you have any questions about which hard hat to rely on for your job’s personal protective equipment (PPE). Stay informed, and stay safe!
Patriotic Hard Hats
Looking for a way to stand out on the job site in the new year? Distinguish yourself or your crew with patriotic hard hats.
You can get designer hard hats from industry leading brands like Fibre Metal, Jackson Safety and MSA. These manufacturers make hard hats with patriotic designs that still have standard safety features. You can expect the same quality head protection you get from typical hard hats by these brands, but with an added flare.
Patriotic hard hats can include national symbols like American flags, the American bald eagle and other designs in full brim and cap styles. In addition to American flag hard hats, you can find Canadian and Puerto Rican hard hats. These full graphics hard hats are a great to show your national pride while you work.

Hard Hat Heating Accessories
When you’re working in cold weather, there are several precautions you can take to keep from getting the flu, frostbite or even hypothermia. According to OSHA, one of the best preventive measures is wearing protective clothing. There are several types of heating accessories that can be worn with hard hats.
Winter liners are the most common type of hard hat heating accessories. While some liners fit around your head, others are designed to protect your neck and face as well. You can find winter liners in one layer, two layers and even 3 layers for extra warmth. Wool and fleece material liners will be more effective than cotton, because they will maintain warmth even if they get wet. This is especially ideal in snowy conditions.
For more mild protection, knitted tube liners can fit over hard hats to protect your head or face. For colder conditions, winter hard hat liners are a better form of protection. These liners are worn around the head, under the hard hat. Many winter liners are flame resistant, and have side pouches that can be used to wear warming packs.
Other cold weather precautions you can take include staying hydrated and keeping a change of work clothes in case your clothes get to wet to wear. In addition to hard hat liners, you can also get winter work gloves and safety jackets instead of safety vests. Stay safe and warm this winter with the right protective clothing.
Hard Hats
Hard hats come in assorted types, colors, and styles. Predominantly used on construction sites, for mining jobs, for welding jobs, and for other occupations where workers perform heavy labor, hard hats offer varying levels of head protection.
ANSI Type I hard hats protect against blows to the top of the head, and ANSI Type II hard hats protect against blows to both the top and sides of the head. Not sure which level of protection your hard hat offers? Check the inside of your helmet’s shell for an ANSI certification label. Both the type and the class of hard hat (either Class G, Class E, or Class C) are printed on this label.
Traditional hard hat colors, like white, orange, and yellow, remain popular out in the field today, but there are many other colors available, too. Pink hard hats, gold hard hats, silver hard hats, and red hard hats are just some alternative options when picking your hard hat color. You can even get full graphic hard hats, printed with NFL logos, camo designs, patriotic graphics, and more.
Hard hats also come in different styles. Cap style hard hats are the most common, followed by full brim hard hats. For lightweight head protection that is not ANSI certified, bump caps are great because of their cost-efficient prices. It’s important to remember, though, that bump caps are only meant to help prevent minor bumps and scrapes. Bump caps are not ANSI approved for impact protection.

Hard hat liners are available as either heating accessories for hard hats or cooling accessories for hard hats.
Heating hard hat liners, also called winter liners, help keep the wearer’s face, neck, and head warm in cold temperatures. Ergodyne’s N-Ferno Warming Product Line features all kinds of winter liners. Stretchy, full face caps comprise the N-Ferno Cool Series, two-layer hard hat liners comprise the brand’s N-Ferno Cold Series, and three-layer hard hat liners comprise the brand’s N-Ferno Extreme Series. A great feature of most of these Ergodyne N-Ferno winter liners is that they contain pockets for warming packs near the ears to offer the wearer extra warmth. Ergodyne also makes shoulder-length hard hat liners, flame resistant liners, and liners made of Sherpa fleece for those needing extra coverage.
Cooling hard hat liners are usually activated when soaked in cold water. They provide hours of comfort. Cooling hard hat liners also help the wearer remain hydrated, which is crucial for safety when working in the heat. Pinlock vs. Ratchet Suspension Hard Hats
When you’re buying hard hats, one of your many choices is what type of suspension you want. Ratchet or pinlock suspension hard hats? If you’re not sure what the difference is, there are a few factors.
Pinlock suspension hard hats use a simple snap and lock system. To make adjustments on a pinlock suspension hard hat, you simply slide the pin over and lock it by snapping the pin into place. Pinlock suspensions are easy to use, but you do have to remove the hard hat to make an adjustment. Hard hats with pinlock suspension are better suited for workers making adjustments less often.
Ratchet suspension hard hats provide the wearer with a firmer fit. You can adjust ratchet suspensions by turning a knob on the back strap of the suspension to either tighten or loosen the fit. While a little more expensive than pinlock suspension hard hats, ratchet suspension hard hats will be more comfortable to wear on job sites all day long. Another benefit of ratchet suspension is that you can adjust your hard hat without removing it from your head, which is ideal for workers who need to make frequent adjustments.
In addition to offering hard hat adjustment, the other purpose of hard hat suspensions is to provide impact protection. The space between the inside dome of the hard hat and the wearer’s head is where the suspension is placed. Suspensions have different point options, typically from four point to eight point suspensions. The number of points a suspension has is the number of places where the suspension contacts the hard hat. Eight point suspensions will give greater protection against impacts and shocks than six point suspensions.
There are many things to think about when buying your hard hats. A good place to start is deciding pinlock or ratchet suspension.
